The Australian Golden Olive Awards has broken many records this year. Every oil submitted won a medal. Twelve of seventy oils were judged as being Gold. Two winners of Best in Show - judges unable to split their decision.
We saw the devotees of Fresh Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil rejoicing their passion and work at the Australian Golden Olive Awards Celebration Dinner at Quality Gateway Wangaratta, with a stunning menu featuring olives and great olive oil.
The Australian Golden Olive Awards is a prestigious national show which offers olive producers the opportunity to have their oil tested both chemical and organoleptic (senses - smell and taste) by an Internationally accredited panel based in Wagga Wagga. This is the only Australian Team recognised at this level and is subject to International standards. Most Extra Virgin Olive Oil Shows use the same laboratory and highly trained sensory panel– which is also used for assessment of oils from around the world.
Olive Oil producers from across Australia, some growers with as few as 20 trees and others producing enough to export, seek certification of their oil being classified as Extra Virgin Olive Oil. New faces from Colale near Wagga Wagga, with only one hundred trees, were awarded Gold and Silver medals for their oils.
Of the seventy entries, there were twelve Gold medals, an amazing result. Every oil submitted won an award, a rare occurrence. The judges and panel were unable to differentiate between the two best oils, so this is the first time we have two Best in Show. Oils of Milawa and Barfold Olives shared this prestige.
